Losing It

Well, I still haven't found a way to eat artisanal ice cream, watch television, and lose 20 pounds.  I am pretty confident that it can't be done.  Well, it can be done if you're an 18-year-old boy, but then you would have to smell like a mountain goat and Axe body spray, so there's always a drawback.

Anyway, we've already hit swamp-ass temperatures here in Tennessee, and putting a bathing suit on is imminent.

And since eating mulch and running forty-eleven miles each day isn't going to happen, I thought I'd give this new book I received from my buddies at One2One Network.  S.A.S.S. Yourself Slim by Cynthia Sass is an interesting read.  I just received it in the mail Saturday, but I gave it a quick read and started on Sunday.  It's Wednesday.  I'm down three pounds.  THREE!  Not bad.

I will be honest here.  I skipped the introductory phase because it's a little too restrictive for me, and still- three pounds in three days is pretty darn good!

Some serious Nonsense (and nomsense)

So, I thought I was just a little bit clever for coming up with the blog name "Utter Momsense".  It's sort of a self-deprecating mommy-blog sort of name, like "Yeah, I'm posting pictures of my kids and they're not really that cute but I sure think they are".  But apparently "Momsense(TM)" is a registered trademark of MOPS, so they just sent me a cease-and-desist letter about it. 

Because what Mothers of Preschoolers really need in their lives is letters from lawyers telling them what to do.

Seriously, MOPS?  You don't have anything better to do, like, I don't know, maybe helping moms and kids?  I guess from a legal standpoint they probably have to protect their trademark or risk losing it.  But since I'm not making any money off the site, and am making no claims to be related to MOPS in any way, they don't actually have any grounds for a trademark infringement case.  But who wants to get into a letter-writing bureaucracy fight with lawyers? 

So, anyway, the long and short of it is, it's time for a name change!  The new name is "Utter Nomsense", and I promise to post more recipes and food-related blog posts in honor of the name.  :-D

First, is something I've been making at least once a week since someone pinned the recipe on Pinterest -- 5-ingredient homemade granola bars!

You could actually make them with just 3 ingredients, but the main point is, they are really easy, cheap, healthy, and everyone in our house loves them.   I changed the recipe slightly from the above link, so here's our house version.

Crunchy Peanut Butter Granola Bars
4 c. oats
3/4 c. peanut butter
1/2 c. honey or other liquid sweetener
1/4 c. chocolate chips
1/4 c. dried fruit (freeze-dried raspberries and dried cherries are the favorites so far)
1/4 c. nuts or seeds that you like (almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, etc).

Preheat oven to 325.  Melt peanut butter by microwaving for about 1 minute.  Put oats in a large bowl, pour in peanut butter and honey.  Stir.  Add other ingredients.  Stir until combined, adding extra honey if needed to keep ingredients stuck together.  Dump into a lightly greased 15x10 baking sheet and smash down with a rubber spatula.  Cut into bars before cooking; I usually cut once along the length, and then make the bars about 2 inches across.  Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes.  Let cool completely before removing from pan carefully with a spatula.
